Dynamix Hot Shot Coaching Success in Warwickshire
Despite an initial mighty downpour, the skies above Leamington cleared on July 20th, to allow 31 coaches from across Warwickshire to enjoy a bespoke coach workshop delivered by New Zealand U21 Selector and High Performance Manager, Judy Weston and her husband Dave Weston from Netball Dynamix.
Focussing on shooting and circle play, the coaches took full advantage of the opportunity to refresh their bank of ideas and drills, whilst being put through their own paces in the shooting circle. The event was funded by Warwickshire County Netball Association as part of its commitment to provide more CPD opportunities for the army of coaches across the county. With 13 local clubs represented, it clearly showed that our coaches are keen to develop their knowledge and bring new ideas back to their club programmes. Watch this space for new coach workshops and events in Warwickshire coming soon.

Danette Matthews and Henley Under 19’s
What is your coaching experience? “I am a level 2 coach, qualifying in 2011 but have been assisting with coaching since 2005. Currently I am coaching at Henley Netball Club and the Warwickshire U16 County Academy. Previously I have coached the Warwickshire U14 Academy and Jaguar Netball Club.” What players are in the U19's squad? “U19s are: Hayley Mitchell, Daisy Turnecliffe, Rachael Lickorish, Phoebe Aston, Maddie Turner, Lydia Cross, Beth Brown, Katie Callaway, Grace Sanders, Mollie McDermott and Ash Green.” How did the U19s get on in the Regional U19s League? “As not many clubs have U19 squads this year the Regional U19s League consisted of clubs that had shown an interest, there was no process to qualify. The league was then split into two divisions with Henley finishing 2nd in their group and playing off for 1st and 2nd place against Linden, where they lost 41-43.” |
What were the factors to their success?
“This squad of players are all very talented in their own right with a number of them currently in or having passed through the Performance Pathway, which definitely made my job easier, but they also took information on board and applied it to their game; which is all you can ask for as a coach! We were lucky to have a squad of “game changers” who were determined to succeed and who worked well together.”
What are your coaching tactics for this particular squad?
“I think I was very lucky with this squad that they were in it for fun. Yes it’s nice to win but they just wanted to play netball. They were all experienced enough as players to be able to identify when changes needed to be made, when things weren’t working and also recognise and appreciate what others brought to the squad so they accepted my laid back, honest coaching style and decisions as well as offering their own thoughts during team talks. I think in most situations I was able to let them get on with it and do their jobs on court so we were able to do ours off court. This U19 squad was an absolute dream to coach. As well as being amazing players they are all lovely and definitely made sacrificing my Sunday morning lie ins worth it! Coaching with Wes (Lesley Blair) was as always a pleasure! I think we both gave each other a well-deserved pat on the back after this one!”
